Our History

Wolf Creek Lodge is a cohousing community located in the Sierra’s historic gold rush country in Grass Valley, CA. Designed by green-award winning local architect Charles Durrett, Wolf Creek Lodge now graces the corner of McKnight Way and Freeman Lane in Grass Valley, California.

Construction was completed in October 2012. The founding members first got together in 2006. Under the guidance of Katie McCamant they weathered the financial crisis of 2008 and, overcoming many challenges,  initiated the project that became the current community.

Sustainability

The founding members were determined to create a sustainable building. A passive solar design with insulation exceeding building code specifications both retained and excluded heat. Thick walls are filled with insulation..

Solar Thermal Panels

Solar thermal panels were included in the original construction. These reduce the cost of gas to provide in floor heating and domestic hot water in all the homes. Most importantly they reduce emissions of green house gases.

Solar Photovoltaic

Some years after initial construction, members contracted for the installation of solar photovoltaic panels. These dramatically save on electricity cost and again reduce emissions.

EV Charging Stations

In 2021 level 2 EV charging stations were installed by PG&E (the local electrical utility) in all 30 member parking spaces. Over the years more and more members have bought electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Walkability

Walkability is a special feature of Wolf Creek Lodge. You can walk to shopping areas and walk in nature along the Wolf Creek Trail.

The map at the top of this page shows how easy it is to access the stores. Need milk? In five minutes walk you can retrieve it from the shelf in SPD. Need something quickly for a potluck? Both SPD and Raley’s offer ready to go selections.

Many members make a daily habit of walking down one of the Wolf Creek Trails – either the paved trail or the single track trail nearer the creek.

Only 700 yards across the freeway you can enter the Empire Mine State Park through a back entrance to find fourteen miles of trails.
